Finding Balance with Halloween Candy

As a holistic nutritionist, most people assume I don’t allow my boys to have any candy. But that’s not how we do things around here.

Halloween has always been one of those holidays that invites a little magic, a little mischief, and to be honest, a whole lot of candy. In our home, we do our best to eat whole, natural foods and limit anything with artificial colours or flavours. But when it comes to Halloween, we choose balance over restriction.

The boys still get to dress up, run from house to house, and enjoy the excitement of their candy haul. What’s different is how we’ve approached it as a family.

Over the years, we’ve talked openly with our boys about ingredients, what goes into their food, how certain dyes and additives can affect their bodies, and why natural foods help them feel their best. It’s been incredible to watch how much they’ve taken that to heart. They’ve become thoughtful about their choices, even when it comes to candy.

There are certain treats, like Skittles, that they’ve decided on their own not to eat because of the dyes. Then there are others, like Smarties, which are made with natural colouring and have become their go-to treat. We don’t have strict rules around it, but the boys understand the importance of balance. They’ll enjoy a few pieces of candy alongside something nourishing, like a handful of nuts, apple slices with peanut butter, or a warm homemade dinner before the festivities begin.

What makes me proud is how mindful they are. Last year, they actually chose not to finish their candy stash. A few weeks later, they ended up giving most of it away, completely their choice.

That’s what balance looks like for us. It’s not about perfection or restriction, it’s about education, awareness, and allowing space for joy.

Halloween is about fun, connection, and community. And with a little intention, it can also be an opportunity to teach our kids how to make choices that honour both their health and their happiness.
