As a mom, I know how easy it is to get caught up in the latest wellness trends, especially when they promise more energy, clearer skin, or better digestion. But here’s the truth—your body is already designed to detox naturally every single day. Instead of relying on extreme cleanses or expensive supplements, I focus on small, consistent habits that help my body (and my family’s) feel balanced and vibrant.
I do think there are times when we need to pause in life for a deep detox, giving our bodies extra support to reset. But for daily life, simple, natural habits can help keep everything functioning optimally.
At Mothers Rooted in Balance, I teach moms how to support their well-being without adding more stress. And at From Roots to You, my focus is on whole-family wellness, ensuring our little ones grow up with strong, healthy habits. So today, I’m sharing simple, holistic ways to help your body detox naturally—no fads, just real nourishment and self-care.
1. Start Your Day with Chlorophyll Water
Chlorophyll is nature’s way of cleansing and oxygenating the body. It supports liver function, aids digestion, and even helps with skin clarity. I add a few drops of liquid chlorophyll to my morning water, but you can also get it from fresh greens like spinach, kale, and parsley. A child-friendly tip? Try blending a handful of greens into a smoothie with banana and mango—kids won’t even taste it!
2. Nourish with Detoxifying Foods
Food is medicine, and the right choices can gently support the body’s natural detox pathways. In our home, we focus on foods that help the liver, kidneys, and gut function optimally:
Lemon Water: Helps with digestion and alkalizes the body.
Beets: Loaded with antioxidants to support liver detox.
Garlic & Onions: Natural antimicrobials that aid in detoxification.
Turmeric: Reduces inflammation and supports liver health.
Cruciferous Vegetables (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts): Boost the liver’s natural detox enzymes.
For kids, try to sneak in these foods by making roasted beet hummus, or adding garlic to homemade bone broth. My kids especially love raw red onions! They enjoy them on their own, but I also mix them into salads or drizzle them with a little honey to mellow the sharpness while keeping all the amazing health benefits.
3. Use Herbs for Gentle Detox
Herbs are an incredible way to gently encourage detoxification without overwhelming the body. Some of my daily favourites include:
Dandelion Root Tea: Supports liver and kidney function (great for moms and safe for kids in small amounts!).
Milk Thistle: A liver-protecting powerhouse.
Burdock Root: Helps purify the blood.
Nettle Leaf: Supports kidney function and is rich in minerals.
Ginger & Cinnamon: Aid digestion and circulation.
I love making a simple nettle or dandelion tea in the morning, and for kids, I brew it lightly and mix it with honey and lemon for a gentle, nourishing drink.
4. Move Your Body Every Day
Sweating is one of the best ways to eliminate toxins. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or dancing with my kids in the living room, movement helps the body stay balanced. A great child-friendly activity? Outdoor scavenger hunts, nature walks, or even a mini obstacle course in the backyard!
5. Dry Brushing & Lymphatic Massage
The lymphatic system needs movement to function properly. Two of my favourite ways to support it are:
Dry Brushing: Before a shower, I use a dry brush in circular motions toward the heart to stimulate lymph flow.
Lymphatic Massage: A gentle technique that moves stagnant fluid and flushes out toxins.
For kids, encouraging outdoor play, jumping rope, or even simple stretching helps keep their lymphatic system healthy!
6. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Water is essential for detoxification. I aim for at least 8 glasses a day, adding a squeeze of lemon for an extra cleansing boost. For my kids, we infuse water with berries, cucumber, or fresh mint to make hydration fun. I also make sure to support hydration with a good quality electrolyte. This helps replenish vital minerals lost through sweat and supports overall body function
For your own electrolyte needs, I recommend choosing a high-quality, natural electrolyte supplement that is free from artificial sugars and additives. Look for one that contains a balanced mix of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium—key minerals that support hydration and muscle function. Some great options are electrolyte powders or tablets that you can mix into your water throughout the
I love using Organika’s high-quality electrolyte supplements. They offer a natural, balanced mix of minerals that help keep me hydrated and energized throughout the day. You can find their products here. And as a bonus, you can use my code TAMMYC25 to save 25% off your order! It's a great way to support your hydration and feel your best. They also carry easy to use kids electrolytes.
If you're looking for an extra boost, you can also make your own electrolyte drink by combining water with a pinch of sea salt, a squeeze of lemon or lime, and a little bit of raw honey for sweetness. This helps replenish electrolytes naturally and supports detoxification. Be sure to drink it alongside your regular water intake to maintain a proper balance.
7. Support Gut Health
A healthy gut is key to effective detoxification. Here’s what works in our home:
Fiber-Rich Foods: Flaxseeds, chia seeds, apples, and whole vegetables keep digestion moving.
Fermented Foods: We love homemade sauerkraut, pickled veggies, and kombucha to support gut bacteria.
Bone Broth: Nourishes the gut lining and is a go-to for my family, especially during colder months.
For kids, making gut-friendly popsicles with coconut yogurt, berries, and a bit of honey is an easy way to support their microbiome.
8. Minimize Toxin Exposure
Reducing your exposure to toxins helps lighten the detox burden on your body. Here are a few ways I do this in our home:
Choose Natural Cleaning Products: Swap out conventional cleaners for DIY options like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils.
Use Non-Toxic Personal Care: I opt for natural deodorant, fluoride-free toothpaste, and chemical-free skincare.
Filter Your Water: We use a high-quality water filter to reduce exposure to chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
Buy Organic When Possible: Especially for the “Dirty Dozen” fruits and vegetables that tend to have the highest pesticide levels.
9. Detoxify Your Environment
Creating a clean, toxin-free home is an essential part of daily detox. Here’s how I keep our space supportive of health:
Indoor Plants: Snake plants, peace lilies, and aloe vera help filter indoor air naturally.
Reduce Plastic Use: We store food in glass containers and avoid plastic whenever possible.
Open Windows Daily: Letting fresh air in helps reduce indoor air pollution.
Switch to Natural Fabrics: Choosing organic cotton, wool, or bamboo for bedding and clothing reduces exposure to synthetic chemicals.
10. Prioritize Restorative Sleep
Your body does its deepest detox work while you sleep. Lack of rest can lead to toxin buildup, brain fog, and sluggish digestion. I prioritize a calming nighttime routine for both myself and my kids: dim lights, herbal tea, and a few minutes of gratitude journaling or bedtime stories.
